This dataset contains quantitative information and metadata from a study on mucus and goblet cell dynamics in Danish piglets aged 4-67 days, and its association to gut maturation and presence of diarrhea. Evaluations were made on Carnoy’s fixed specimens of jejunal and colonic intestinal wall samples collected at necropsy and subsequently processed for histopathology. Sections were stained with MUC2 antibody and the bacteria-derived mucin-binding molecule X409. 6 piglets from each age group were included in the study, comprising three cases and three controls, which were assigned based on fecal score at the day of and/or one week prior to necropsy.

Samples were evaluated in QuPath, and the dataset contains quantitative information from 10 representative crypts from each intestinal segment, from each pig and each staining. The data includes information on total goblet cell numbers, positive cell numbers, spatial information on location within the crypt/crypt villus unit and positive staining area, all of which is also described in the abbreviations tab of the dataset. All goblet cells were counted manually using the point tool in QuPath, positive staining area was calculated using a machine-learning pixel classifier to identify positive staining within the manually annotated crypts, and information on staining intensity was measured by evaluation the mean optic density of the digital images.
