The attached files provide supporting information about the study “On the intra-laboratory replicability of results obtained in groups of animals that were not exposed to, or unaffected by, experimental manipulations – Exemplified by spatial learning in pigs (Sus Domesticus) across 12 holeboard studies” (van der Staay et al., 2026)
S1 – Supporting information: Intra-lab replicability of spatial learning in untreated pigs in a holeboard task.
This file provides an overview of the various types of replication study.
S2 – Supporting information – Additional information about the 12 holeboard studies
Table S2.1 provides an overview of the studies used to determine the replicability of HB results in pigs and of the pig breeds trained in the 12 holeboard (HB) studies.
Table S2.2 provides details about the post-weaning housing conditions and training and testing procedures in the HB studies.
Table S2.3 describes the groups of pigs tested in each study, and which of these groups were included in the replicability analysis.
Table S2.4 provides further details on the variable inter-visit interval (IVI) and ambient temperature (in °C) during post-weaning housing and testing.
S3 – Supporting Information – Alternative inclusion and exclusion criteria for selecting pigs
Table S3.1 lists the inclusion and exclusion criteria that were used for the strictest selection (selection 3) of groups of pigs for the replicability analysis.
Table S3.2 shows the results of the correlation analyses between working memory (WM) and reference memory (RM) performance in the first trial block, which was used as an indicator of initial performance level, and the slope (used as an indicator of WM and RM learning). Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients (rPM) are shown.
S4 – Supporting information – Data used for replicability analysis of 12 holeboard studies in pigs
This dataset was used to analyse the replicability of holeboard learning in pigs, based on the first two selection criteria described by van der Staay et al. (2026). Please note that the datasets and scripts used for these analyses have been archived and are available to retrieve from Datav
