Make an informed decision

How to evaluate an academic publisher

A publisher name alone does not establish the quality of every journal in its portfolio. Review the individual journal and verify time-sensitive claims at their original source.

01

Check the journal

Confirm its scope, editorial board, peer-review process, publication history and contact details.

02

Verify indexing

Check claimed coverage directly in trusted indexing databases; inclusion can differ by journal and year.

03

Review costs and rights

Read APC, waiver, copyright, licensing, correction, withdrawal and archiving policies before submission.

04

Use the official link

Submit only through the journal’s verified website and be cautious of unsolicited emails or look-alike domains.

Publisher questions

Frequently asked questions

What is an academic publisher?

An academic publisher manages scholarly journals, books or research platforms and coordinates editorial, peer-review and publication services.

How can I compare journal publishers?

Compare the journals in each portfolio, subject coverage, peer-review policies, open-access options, fees, indexing claims and publication ethics information.

How do I check whether a publisher is trustworthy?

Verify the publisher and journal websites, editorial board, peer-review process, fees, contact details, preservation policy and claimed indexing directly with the relevant databases.

Does a publisher profile guarantee that every journal is indexed?

No. Indexing is journal-specific and can change. Always verify an individual journal in the official indexing database before submitting a manuscript.

Data note: Publisher portfolio counts reflect journals currently linked in JournalsWorld and may not represent a publisher’s complete catalog. Metrics and policies can change; verify critical information at the official source.
