Explore majors and build an academic plan
Stanford’s Explore Majors service brings together majors, minors, interdisciplinary options, honours and coterminal programmes. Students can declare a major during their first or second year and can change direction if their interests develop. The current University Bulletin is the reference for formal programme requirements.

When comparing options, look beyond the name. Make a shortlist of introductory courses, the mathematics or laboratory preparation they require, and the compulsory upper-level work. Then compare the room available for electives, study abroad or an independent project. A minor or coterminal option needs its own planning; its presence in a directory does not mean automatic admission.
First-year application and documents
Stanford’s published first-year checklist requires the Common Application, a USD 100 fee or waiver request, SAT or ACT results, a school report with a counsellor recommendation, academic records and two teacher recommendations. A midyear transcript is due by February 15.

2026–27 tuition and housing costs

The combined figure is calculated from the two published charges. It is not a complete cost-of-attendance budget: allow separately for other fees, books, personal expenses, travel and applicable insurance. Stanford announced that undergraduate tuition would remain unchanged for 2026–27, while standard room and board increased.

For a realistic comparison with another university, use the same currency, number of study months and expense categories. A nine-month budget may leave a separate summer housing cost. Ask what is refundable before paying a deposit or accepting accommodation.
Need-based financial aid
Stanford describes its undergraduate aid as need-based. Its published thresholds cover tuition for families below USD 150,000 income with typical assets, and tuition, room and board below USD 100,000 with typical assets. These are policy summaries, not an individual award estimate. Family assets and circumstances still matter.
The university says admission is need-blind for all but some international applicants. International applicants should therefore review the aid question in their admission application carefully. Use Stanford’s own cost estimators and ask the Financial Aid Office how its rules apply to your household.

Research beyond the classroom
Stanford’s undergraduate research guidance describes faculty-mentored work in laboratories, libraries, studios and independent projects. This makes research relevant to students in many disciplines, rather than only those studying science.

A concrete example is the Sociology department’s 2026–27 undergraduate opportunities: projects involve literature reviews, interviews, survey analysis, statistical tools and research on urban change. Tasks and required skills vary by project.

Before approaching a mentor, read a recent project description and identify the skills you could contribute. Ask whether the role is paid, for credit or voluntary, what training is provided and how much time it requires. An advertised opportunity is not a guaranteed position.
Housing and everyday campus life
