Education and research profile
Fei-Fei Li trained in physics at Princeton, graduating in 1999, and received her doctorate in electrical engineering from Caltech in 2005. Her work spans computer vision, machine learning and human-centred artificial intelligence. She joined Stanford in 2009 after faculty appointments at Illinois and Princeton.
ImageNet and visual recognition
Li is closely associated with ImageNet and the ImageNet Challenge, which provided a large-scale dataset and shared evaluation setting for visual recognition. Such resources allow different research groups to compare approaches on common tasks. This contribution highlights the role of data and evaluation infrastructure alongside the invention of learning algorithms.
A broader programme in AI
Her research interests include computer vision, cognitively inspired AI and systems that interpret human activity. Stanford’s account also describes work on ambient intelligence in healthcare settings. These directions connect questions about visual understanding with the design of systems intended to operate around people. Her earlier research included computational and cognitive approaches to understanding vision.
